FAQ

How It Works

  • What is eTaxHero?

eTaxHero is the Hero of Online Tax Prep.  It is an extremely affordable fee-for-service in which you provide us your tax information and we prepare your taxes.  Through our system, eTaxHero offers services which are convenient, affordable and accurate.

  • Why should I trust eTaxHero?

We have more experience and expertise than our competitors.  We have over 15 years of tax preparation experience and we have prepared and/or reviewed over 20,000 tax returns.  Our team consists of  a licensed attorney, a tax law instructor, and a former tax center manager.  Unlike our competitors, we are NOT seasonal hires who receive some training before the start of the tax season.  Before eTaxHero was created, we were the tax professionals that you would go to in order to FIX your tax return prepared by seasonal hires. That’s why you should trust us.

  • How safe and secure is this site?

We have SSL security encryption throughout our entire site and servers.  Therefore, all your sensitive and private information will stay confidential.  Also, once we complete your return and it is accepted by the IRS, we delete your tax documents from our server.

  • Do you also prepare state returns?

Oh why yes we do!  For most of you, you only need one state return and this would be free.  For those who have to file more than one state return, each additional return is $10.

  • What makes you different from other online tax websites?

All the other online tax websites are Do-It-Yourself (DIY).  These DIY sites are computers and servers in which you punch in information and it generates your tax return.  If you know what you are doing, then these sites are great.  But, if you don’t (and too often is the case), then you are risking hundreds of dollars.  There is a difference.  We have actual tax professionals who will create your return and maximize your return.  We know the tax code, so let us help you get a bigger refund.

  • How are you better than the free online tax services?

Most of these "free" services are extremely limited and none of them offer a free state return ($20 value).  So, for the price of a state return, we will give you more comprehensive tax prep services and you do none of the heavy lifting.  And, that is why we are better.

  • How are you better than brick-and-mortar tax centers/offices?

Simply put: Better Quality, Lower Prices.  With us, you get more than you pay for.  We are able to keep prices low because we do not need to pay rent, utilities, property taxes, and etc.  Our prices were set with you in mind.

  • How do I upload documents to have my taxes prepared?

After you have completed inputting your information, you will have the option to upload your documents to our secure server.  If you are submitting pictures, please make sure that our eTax preparers can read it.  You can upload up 100mb worth of files.  Any additional tax documents will have to be emailed directly to account@etaxhero.com.

  • Is there a specific format for the files that I upload?

While we would prefer pdf files, you can upload files of any type.  If your employer/banking institution emails your tax documents to you, you can just attach those files.  But, if you still receive paper copies of your tax documents, you can take pictures of those documents and attach them.

  • Can I upload my files from my phone?

Yes.  Just take clear pictures of all your tax documents or download those items onto your phone.  Then, fill out the form and upload the documents.  Easy as easy gets.

  • Should I upload a copy of my prior year's tax return?

We definitely recommend it.  Numbers or letters may get switched, so uploading a copy of your prior year's tax return would allow us to ensure 100% accuracy (and expedite your refund).

  • I am trying to upload my documents, but the site is not allowing me. What should I do?

You should be able to upload by clearing your cache and restarting your browser.  If that does not work, then you can submit without the documents and one of our eTax Preparers will reach out to you to retrieve it.

  • Will I get a copy of my tax return?

Yes.  After we complete your taxes, we will e-file everything with the IRS and the applicable state agencies.  Once the submissions are accepted, then we will send you a password-protected copy of your tax return.

  • How will I know my taxes have been completed?

We will contact you after the IRS accepts your tax return.  At the same time, we will send you a password-protected copy of your tax return for your records.

  • How long do we keep your tax information on file?

We will maintain your tax information in our system for 3 years.  Within that time span, if you ever need another copy of your tax documents, let us know.

  • What happens if you prepare my return, but my [institution] sends me more tax documents?

This happens all the time and we get it.  You were eager for your tax refund and you wanted to get it ASAP.  But, you forgot about a banking institution who lagged on getting you those documents.  No big deal!  Just send us those documents and we will amend your tax return for free (if it stays within your service package).  Once you receive your amended return, you will have to mail off a copy to the IRS.

  • I forgot my e-file PIN, where can I go to retrieve it?

The IRS discontinued its e-file PIN retrieval service.  Instead, you would need to use your prior year’s adjusted gross income (AGI) to validate your signature.  If you can’t find this, then you can retrieve it at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript.

  • When is the IRS tax filing deadline?

April 15th.  But, if that day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then the deadline is pushed to the following business day.

  • How long does it take until I receive my refund?

From the date that the IRS accepts your tax return, it takes anywhere between 2-3 weeks until you receive your refund.  However, this year, if you receive Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, your refund will not be sent until at least February 15th.

  • What happens if my tax return is rejected by the IRS?

When a return is rejected, it is not an audit.  Rather, the IRS has a database of information which it compares with the submitted return.  If the personal data do not match up, then they kick the return back to us with a reason why.  Once we get the information to resolve the issue, we re-submit the return to the IRS.

  • What are the most common errors with tax preparation?

In our experience, the most common errors are: (1) incorrect PIN; (2) incorrect SSN; or (3) incorrect spelling of names.

  • When does the IRS start charging interest and penalties?

If you owe back taxes to the IRS, then you must pay by April 15th!  If payments are not made in time, then the IRS may assess a penalty and charge you interest.
